Sales director rejoins MGS Technical Plastics

Mark Preston has been appointed as sales director of MGS Technical Plastics, rejoining the company he first worked for more than a decade ago.

Mark, who is an Incorporated Engineer for the Engineering Council, first joined the business in 2006 as technical sales manager. Back then, the firm was known as MG Plastics, before acquiring Stuma and later rebranding as MGS.

Mark joins as the Blackburn-based plastic injection moulding specialist reaches ever closer to its target of £12million annual turnover. The company has invested more than £1m in new machinery, property, staff and training to reach its goal, and recently earned Best Engineering Company at the Lancashire Red Rose Awards 2018.

“It’s really good to be back,” said Mark. “There’s a real buzz about the place. The team is really motivated and the company is growing at an unprecedented pace.”

Mark, who is from nearby Burnley, began his engineering career in 1985 serving his apprenticeship in toolmaking. He moved into the automotive sector in 1995, and then served as a project engineer for a decade. Mark then spent six years as a technical sales manager with MGS and six more in a similar role with Patterson and Rothwell.

He added: “After six years away, I realised it was the perfect time to join the team again. It’s been really great to see that many of the jobs I introduced first time around are still here, proving that this is a business that thinks long-term.”

MGS has also internally recruited two roles for trainee toolroom maintenance and trainee technician.

Job Description -graduate industrial engineer

Application-form- MGS

MGS Welcomes Judson as new Project Engineer.

In line with our growth plans, MGS Technical Plastics has recruited experienced project engineer Judson Smythe from South Africa.

His appointment follows a review of the additional management capacity needed to handle the increase in orders here at MGS.

Our director John Sturgess said: “We’ve got some really big projects coming up and realised that we needed a specialist to manage the processes and keep them on schedule”

Judson (30) joins us from the Jasco Group in Durban, SA, where he was an engineering manager working with 50 injection moulding machines and a workforce of 250.

He was previously a tool and die maker, and later studied industrial engineering at Durban University of Technology.

Judson said: “I’ve always worked in the plastics industry and joining MGS is the perfect opportunity to expand my horizons and experience another country’s approach to the manufacturing sector.

“In my new role I will be responsible for new product introduction and managing current projects. I’ll be drawing on my experience whilst working on technical projects to ensure that our work is done right, first time, every time.”

John added “With his international experience of working within world leading organisations, Judson has a lot to bring to the table and we’re looking forward to working with him, hearing his ideas and delivering an even better service to our customers.”

Non-executive Director Glenn Cooper

MGS strengthens growth plans with non-executive director

MGS has laid the groundwork for our next phase of expansion with the appointment of our first non-executive director, an advisor to Prime Minister David Cameron.

Glenn Cooper, who has been invited to 10 Downing Street and on to BBC TV to discuss business issues, joins us as we aim to increase our annual turnover from £4m to £10m within the next five years.

MGS already has a strong record of investment and growth in recent years, including a £2m relocation from Bolton to our current Blackburn home, as well as a series of appointments throughout a number of departments.

Our owner John Sturgess said: “We have enjoyed great success with our expansion plans so far, but each time we set our sights higher, we enter into unchartered territory.”

“Glenn is an experienced business owner and advisor with a string of successes under his belt. His knowledge and expertise will play a crucial role in guiding us through the next stage of our development and we are very excited to welcome him to our team.”
